Our first time trying Fish n' Chips

If you are British, having fish and chips is certainly nothing new to you. For us, as Portuguese, it is - kind of. 
Well, if we think about it, in Setúbal (Portugal) - the city where I grew up - we have a traditional dish called choco frito, which is fried cuttlefish served with chips and salad. So technically it was not my first time having fish and chips... But they are nothing alike and we almost forget that "Choco frito" is even fish.
So let's pretend to forget about that small detail. In Portugal, we have a million ways to cook codfish. Believe me, it's true. We also have other million ways to cook other fishes, but usually it doesn't include fries as a side dish. 
The first time I heard about fish and chips, still in Portugal, the expression that would have better defined my idea of it would be something like: 'Uhhrr, that sounds disgusting'. 
I was totally wrong. On our first visit to Gozo - which I will talk about soon - we were short on time, so João found this small spot called Stanley's Chippy, on the San Gorg Basilica square. Initially we were all going for some burger, but then I noticed that their specialty was Beer Battered Cod and decided to try it. After me, João and his mum also changed ther minds and went for the same, and João's dad will always regret to not follow the crowd.  


As a good portuguese, I have tried codfish in so many different ways that I can't even remember. I must say, though, that this was nothing similar to the ones I tried before. 
The first thing that surprised us: the size. It was huge! The way it was battered fried is different from the way we do it (guess it is because of the beer?!?) and third, the codfish is fresh.
What do I mean by fresh? In Portugal we consume salted codfish - google it and you'll understand - the first time I saw fresh codfish was here, in Malta. Actually, here I haven't even found salted codfish yet. If you know where I can find it, btw, please leave a comment, the "Tugas" will appreciate it. 


So, for us it was the first time we tried codfish like this. If you are wondering, yes, there are differences. The biggest one I noticed was the texture, this one was much softener that the salted codfish we are used to. Apart from all the differences, it was delicious.
The old me, from a few years ago would be surprised as fish and chips can be such a good match. So, if you still have your doubts, don't. Try it and you'll see how good it is. If you visit Gozo, I would definitely suggest you to visit Stanley's Chippy and ask for their specialty. Unfortunately I only took pictures of the food, but the place is very easy to find if you use google maps. The food was good, a nice spot, very central, and the owners were also very nice.

  3. r: Curiosamente, apesar de aquela história não ser verídica, comecei a escrevê-la após a morte da minha avó. Por isso, há muitos sentimentos transversais, muitas dúvidas, muita revolta, mesmo que tudo o resto seja meramente ficcional, foi uma forma de também fazer o meu luto; de passar para o papel, num contexto diferente, muitas inquietações que marcaram aquela altura.

    Nunca estamos preparados para esses momentos e sentimos tudo de uma forma mais intensa por ser alguém tão próximo. O nosso sentimento de impotência é tão grande, que se torna difícil gerir as emoções e os acontecimento.
    Fico mesmo feliz por saber que tudo terminou da melhor maneira, minha querida *-*

    Sim, sem dúvida, também acho que esse medo acaba por estar mais presente, passas é a ter outros mecanismos de defesa. Mas é sempre complicado e desgastante, até porque nunca se está a contar.
    Ter uma base de apoio é crucial, só assim conseguimos não desabar. Ou, então, desabar, mas ter alguém que nos puxe para a superfície. Sem esse núcleo é mais insuportável e difícil.
